Abbeville
Abbeville: A Historic River Town
Location and History
Abbeville sits on the Somme River, about 20 km from its modern mouth at the English Channel. Recognised as the historic capital of the former county of Ponthieu and maritime Picardy, the town was founded in 1758 by a group of French Huguenots and officially incorporated as a municipality in South Carolina on December 20 1832. It played a key role during the Civil War and remains steeped in heritage, often called the “Cradle and Bed of the Confederacy.” History and culture blend here, offering visitors an authentic experience.
Population and Heritage
Despite its historic roots, Abbeville is a vibrant community with a diverse population. Highlights include the Opera House, the historic downtown district, and the iconic Burt‑Stark Mansion. The town is surrounded by state parks such as Calhoun Falls State Park and picturesque lakes like Russell Lake and Secession Lake. In January 2008, former First Lady Laura Bush designated Abbeville a Preserved Community, recognising its commitment to protecting cultural and natural heritage.
Transportation
Abbeville is well‑served by rail, with the local station connecting to Boulogne‑sur‑Mer, Amiens, Calais and Paris. The nearby A16 highway provides easy road access to other regions, and its strategic position between Rouen and Lille makes it a key transit point.
Things to Do
The historic downtown, also known as Abbeville Square, is an architectural treasure. Each October the town hosts the Hogs and Hens BBQ Festival, featuring live music, artisans and BBQ delights. In spring, the Abbeville Spring Festival draws visitors with music and rides. Proximity to four lakes, three state parks, and the famous Diamond Hill Gem Mine makes the area appealing to nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
